Saturday's Song!

Photobucket

Ok. I admit. This is a V-E-R-Y silly choice. I will explain.
First of all, I DO love Country music. Not all of it.
But some of it I really like.
Some of it, (like anything else) I wonder "Who listens to this stuff?"
That said, I understand that it is a bit strange, OK, a lot strange,
to those who did not grow up listening to it!
Blame it on my rebellious phase as a teen.
Because when everyone else was discovering ,
well...everything else,
I decided I would like Country music, partially because I really saw merit,
partially becaue I was a VERY difficuly teenage daughter,
and my Mom REALLY did not like Country music!
So Sorry Mom! xoxox!
The next part to this story is that when my husband comes to bed (after working all night)
He's punchy and giddy and sleepy silly!
SO, you can thank him for this!
He was be-bopping in the bed this morning at 6:00 a.m.
ME: Honey what are you doing?
HONEY: I'm singing David Allen Coe...it's stuck in my head!
ME: Which one (don't know why I asked, I knew - there's only ONE it could be!)
HONEY: Mama and the train song!
ME: Groans...spends next 30 minutes realizing this is the only song that she can post today, because it is SO stuck in her head!
Imagines what the pic of The Mama must look like.
Imagines loss of bloggy friends when they see and read this post! Aaaiiiee!
Reading it doesn't do it justice, Ya'll!
Because the sound is really catchy!
I hope you know this is in good fun!
Note my last post on laughter, it does a body good! :)
You Never Even Call Me By My Name
By David Allen Coe
It was all that I could do to keep from cryin'
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me by my name.
You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride.
You don't have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore.
Even though your on my fightin' side.
CHORUS
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me by my name.
I've heard my name a few times in your phone book
I've seen it on signs where I've Played
But the only time I know, I'll hear David Allan Coe
Is when Jesus has his final judgement day.
CHORUS...
Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
and he told me it was the perfect country and western song
I wrote him back a letter and told him it was NOT
the perfect country and western song
because he hadn't said anything about
Momma, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or gettin' drunk.
Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song
and he sent it to me and after reading it,
I realized that my friend had written the perfect country and western song.
And I felt obliged to include it on this album.
The last verse goes like this here:
Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison.
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a danged old train.
CHORUS:
So I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
No, You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me,
I wonder why you don't call me
Why don't you ever call me by my name.

Sorry - I have never heard of the song - but then I haven't heard much of anything on the radio lately.

I am more impressed that you are bee bopping with your hubby at 6am! Holy Smokes! My husband would be so dead if he woke me up that early (unless I had to be someplace which I usually don't!).

Uggghhh. I so get songs stuck in my head like that and they NEVER LEAVE. My dreams can be centered around the stinkin' song that I've been singing in my awake hours.

Way to go you guys for singing like rock stars before I even rolled out of bed!!

Karolee,
that is quite OK! It's an acquired taste, I'm guessing like sushi or something like that! It's all for laughs! If I didn't have dial-up, I'd have posted the video, & I may still, you REALLY can't appreciate it 'til you hear it! LOL!

Cecily,
That's so it! They get stuck in your head! I can't wait until next week! I already know what I am going to post, but it is completely different!

You got it! We were rockin' like stars!

As Elvis would say, Thank you, thank you very much!

Good to see your post about "You Never Even Call Me by My Name" by Steve Goodman. He often doesn't get his due.

You might be interested in my new 800-page biography, "Steve Goodman: Facing the Music." The book delves deeply into the genesis of "You Never Even Call Me by My Name," including John Prine's co-writing role and debunking David Allan Coe's claim that he had anything to do with instigating the song's consummate final verse.

In case people want to get the book, please know that the first printing just sold out, and the second printing probably will be out in late February. To sign up to be notified about the availability of the second printing, visit my Internet site (below) and click on the "online store" page. Just trying to spread word about the book. Feel free to do the same!

What Does it Mean Anyway? "Free to Fly"...

Well, it's like this: Here are some of the Webster's Dictionary definitions of Free: a : having the legal and political rights of a citizen b : enjoying civil and political liberty c : enjoying political independence or freedom from outside domination d : enjoying personal freedom : not subject to the control or domination of another2 a : not determined by anything beyond its own nature or being : choosing or capable of choosing for itself...having a scope not restricted by qualification 7 a : not obstructed, restricted, or impeded ...Now, here are some of the Webster's Dictionary definitions of Fly:1 a : to move in or pass through the air with wings b : to move through the air or before the wind or through outer space c : to float, wave, or soar in the air ... a : to take flight ...6 : to work successfully ...Examples which apply from Websters: fly high : to be elated - fly in the face of or fly in the teeth of : to stand or act forthrightly or brazenly in defiance or contradiction of

What does this mean in my life? This means that in life we are meant to be free. While historically mankind has not always enjoyed the opportunity to fully appreciate what that means, we are so indescribably fortunate as to live in a time of the greatest spiritual, physical, financial and political freedom ever known. Freedom doesn't come cheap, nor does it come easy. But the best things in life don't come that way do they? As I write this I am struck by how this sounds like a political statement, and for me this is much more of a spiritual thing, but, same goes for that (political that is). Freedom doesn't come easy. And it's worth whatever fight you have to make to overcome in your life in order to live a life that succeeds. Now the questions is - what is success for you? What is your standard? In my mind what is needed is a definite target - because you can't hit and maintain a moving target. A stable, rock-solid, anchor with no variable, yet multi-faceted. Something pure, just and worthy. If you look at any web page of news you can see that our society is certainly lacking in this area. What a great time to live as a rebel! Nowadays to be a rebel, all you have to do is be willing to engage in the battle of life, while anchored to Christ!
